Frequently Asked Questions: ResortLock | Remote Access Lock System

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the remote access code get from the computer to the lock?
Actually, it doesn’t.  The lock and code generation software work independently of each other.  You never need to directly connect the lock to your computer.  For a explanation of the technology behind ResortLock, read our article on How It Works.

How is the lock powered?
No electrical wiring required.  ResortLock takes 4 AA batteries that last anywhere from 1 to 3 years.  We recommend changing the batteries ever year.  When the battery starts running low, you will hear 4 rapid beeps after you unlock the door.

What is the longest period of time a remote code will work for?
A code that is provided by the remote code generation software can last up to 90 days.  However, you can also program the ResortLock with up to 300 permanent codes (up to 800 with the ResortLock Management Software).

How many remote codes can be issued for the same time period?
The RL2000 can issue one remote code during the same time period.  The RL4000, however, can issue up to 4 remote codes during the same time period.  So, if you wanted to give 4 people access on the same day, like a guest, cleaning person, electrician and a painter, you could do that with the RL4000.

What times of day can I specify for check in and check out?
You can start access and end access any time of day on the hour.  Therefore, there are 24 start times and 24 end times.

Can you also issue permanent codes?
Yes, you can issue up to 300 permanent codes with the RL2000 & RL4000.  However, with the Lock Management Software, you can issue up to 800 permanent codes.  Each of these codes can be programmed with different access shifts.  For example, you could control certain codes so that they would only work between the hours of 8:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Friday.

Why does the remote code have to be 8 digits long?
An 8 digit code greatly reduces the chances of break in as it would be astronomically unlikely for someone to be able to guess the entry code.  Your guest will be able to create a 4 digit temporary code for their stay so they don’t have to enter the 8 digit code every time they unlock the door.  This 4 digit code will expire at the same time as the 8 digit remote code you provided.

How many audit events are recorded by the lock?
The ResortLock can store 4000 or more audit events at any time.

How do I get Audit Trail information off the lock?
To get Audit Trail information (information about who has accessed your property and when) from your lock, you will need to have the Lock Management Software.  With this package, you will use the iButton programming key to get information off your lock.  Simply touch the iButton to the iButton reader, and information will transfer from the lock to the iButton.  Then, connect the iButton to your computer via the USB adaptor and view the Audit Trail information.

How far in advance can a code be provided to a guest?
Codes can be generated for any time in the future, even years in advance.  So, for example, if you had your property booked by even 100 different guests over the next two years, you could issue all of those codes on the same day if you desired.

What happens if a guest loses their code or needs to extend their visit?
No problem.  Simply generate a new code for any time period you wish via the remote code generator and provide to your guest over the phone.

Once the code expires, can it ever be used again?
No.  That is the beauty of the ResortLock.  Guests can’t get in one minute before you specify nor will they ever be able to use the code again after it expires.

What if I need to give access to someone just for one single visit, like an electrician?
You can issue up to 16 one-time use codes at a time.  The code will give access the first time they are used and then never again.

What if I only want to give access to our cleaning person one day a week during certain hours?
Codes can be customized with shift schedules so they will only work during certain times of the day, certain days of the week, or both.  For example, you could customize a code with a shift so that it would only provide access every Monday from 10am to 4pm.

Does ResortLock come with a key override?
Yes.  A key override is provided with every lock.

What is an iButton?
An iButton is like a key fob.  It contains a magnetic chip that when touched to the iButton reader on the ResortLock, can unlock the door if programmed to do so.  There are different iButtons that have different functionality.  For example, there is a programming iButton that will carry information between the lock and your computer.

Can the remote code I make open any other ResortLock?
No.  Every ResortLock has unique codes.  This is ensured because each ResortLock calculates its access codes by using its serial number as part of the calculation.  No two ResortLocks have the same serial number so every lock produces unique access codes.
